UK Student Visa Financial Requirement 2026: Bank Balance

UK

GAC Advisors Editorial Team

You have your offer letter, your CAS is on the way, and now one question keeps you up at night: how much money do I actually need in the bank?

Get it wrong and the Home Office can refuse your application, even when your grades and university are perfect. Get it right and the financial part of your file becomes the easiest one to defend.

This guide gives you the 2026 numbers, the exact formula, and the 28-day rule in plain language. It also covers what counts as valid proof and what to do if you are applying from Pakistan. Read it once and you will know your number before you speak to anyone.

For a UK student visa you must show your outstanding first-year tuition fees plus living costs for up to nine months. Currently that is £1,529 a month in London and £1,171 a month outside London. The money must stay in your account for 28 consecutive days, and the statement must end within 31 days of your application.

What Is the UK Student Visa Financial Requirement?

The UK student visa financial requirement is a rule that makes you prove you can pay for your course and support yourself without working illegally or relying on public funds. It sits in the Immigration Rules under Appendix Student and Appendix Finance.

In simple words, UKVI wants to see two things: money for tuition and money for living costs. Together they are called your "maintenance funds" and "course fees" in official language.

You can read the official version on the GOV.UK Student visa money page and in Appendix Finance.

This requirement also feeds into the Genuine Student assessment. A caseworker looks at your funds, your course choice and your study history together. Clean finances support your whole story.

If you want the full route overview, start with our UK student visa guide for Pakistani applicants.

Why Does This Matter So Much for Pakistani Students?

Pakistani students are one of the largest groups applying to UK universities, and finances are where many files break.

Recent numbers show why extra care is needed:

  • Pakistan was the third most common nationality for UK study visas in the year ending June 2025, with 37,013 grants to main applicants, about 9% of the total.
  • In the year ending June 2026, Home Office statistics show grants to Pakistani students fell by 47%.
  • ICEF Monitor, citing Nous Group and Home Office data, reported that the refusal rate for Pakistani sponsored-study applicants rose to 41% across Q4 2025 and Q1 2026, up from just under 6% a year earlier.

Read that last point carefully. Pakistan is not covered by the UK's 2026 "visa brake". That measure only affects Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan. But higher refusal rates mean caseworkers are checking documents more closely.

The message is simple: a genuine student with clean, well-documented funds still has a strong chance. A student with unexplained deposits or a rushed bank statement does not.

Our guide on the top visa rejection reasons shows how often financial errors appear in refused files.

How Much Bank Balance Is Required for a UK Student Visa in 2026?

You need enough money to cover your outstanding tuition plus living costs. The living-cost part depends on where your university is.

London vs Outside London: The Monthly Living Cost Rates

Here are the current figures for applications made now:

  • Inside London: £1,529 per month, which is £13,761 for the full nine months.
  • Outside London: £1,171 per month, which is £10,539 for nine months.

"London" means the City of London and the 32 London boroughs. If your university's main campus sits in that area, the higher rate applies.

Nine months is the maximum. A 12-month Master's still only requires nine months of maintenance. A shorter course, such as six months, uses the actual number of months.

The Master Formula: Tuition Plus Living Costs

Here is the formula in one box:

Total funds required = Outstanding first-year tuition + (monthly maintenance × up to 9 months) − allowed accommodation deduction

Let's break the pieces down.

Outstanding tuition is the first-year course fee shown on your CAS, minus any deposit you have already paid to the university. Your CAS lists both numbers, so UKVI checks them against your bank documents.

Maintenance is the monthly rate multiplied by the number of months (max nine).

The accommodation deduction is an optional reduction if you have paid university-managed housing fees. More on that below.

What Is the Maximum Maintenance Amount?

The maximum is currently £13,761 in London and £10,539 outside London. These caps do not include tuition.

What Changes on 30 November 2026?

The numbers are going up, so timing matters.

For applications made on or after 30 November 2026, the requirement rises to £1,570 per month in London and £1,203 outside London. The maximum for nine months becomes £14,130 and £10,827.

In plain terms:

  • London goes up by £41 a month.
  • Outside London goes up by £32 a month.

If you are ready to apply before that date, the current rates apply. If your application slips past it, you will need more money. Build a small buffer now so a delay does not cost you a refusal.

Can You Lower the Amount You Must Show?

Yes, in two legal ways. Both depend on what your CAS records.

Tuition Deposits Already Paid

If you paid a tuition deposit and your CAS shows it, you only need to prove the remaining balance. For example, a £3,000 deposit on £16,000 fees leaves £13,000 to show.

University Accommodation Payments (Capped)

If you paid the university directly for accommodation, that amount can reduce your maintenance figure, up to a cap. The cap is being raised from £1,529 to £1,570 as part of the September 2026 changes.

Important: this only works for money paid to your sponsoring university. Private landlord deposits or Airbnb bookings do not count.

A Worked Example (Illustrative Numbers)

Numbers make this real. These examples are illustrative, so always use your own CAS figures.

Example 1: Master's in Manchester (outside London)

First-year tuition: £16,000
Deposit paid: £3,000 → outstanding £13,000
Maintenance: 9 × £1,171 = £10,539
Accommodation paid to university: £500 → maintenance becomes £10,039
Total to show: £23,039

Example 2: Master's in London

First-year tuition: £18,000
Deposit paid: £4,000 → outstanding £14,000
Maintenance: 9 × £1,529 = £13,761
Accommodation paid to university: £1,000 → maintenance becomes £12,761
Total to show: £26,761

Same Manchester student after 30 November 2026:

Outstanding tuition: £13,000
Maintenance: 9 × £1,203 = £10,827, minus £500 = £10,327
Total to show: £23,327

It is a small jump, but every pound counts when a balance dips.

How Does the 28-Day Rule Work?

The 28-day rule means your required funds must sit in your account for 28 consecutive days without falling below the total. The 28-day period must end within 31 days of your visa application date.

That gives you two clocks to manage.

The "Zero-Dip" Rule

Your balance must stay at or above the required amount on every single day of the 28. If it drops below on day 20, that period fails. You would need a fresh 28-day run.

Practical tip: keep a buffer of 5-10% above the target. Bank charges, tax deductions and small withdrawals happen.

The 31-Day Statement Window

Your statement's closing date must fall within 31 days of the day you submit your application. A statement that ends six weeks earlier is out of date, even if the balance looked perfect.

Can I Deposit Money Just Before Applying?

You can, but it will not help on its own. A large deposit two weeks before your application usually means the 28 days are not covered, and it invites questions about the source of funds. Plan at least two months ahead.

Our detailed bank statement for visa guide walks through statement formats and bank-letter wording.

How Do You Convert Pakistani Rupees to Pounds?

UKVI does not want your own guess. When your funds are in PKR, you convert using the rate published by OANDA on the date you apply. Use the OANDA currency converter and screenshot the result.

For illustration only, suppose £1 equals PKR 380. Then £10,539 would be about PKR 4.0 million. Exchange rates move daily, so calculate again before you submit.

Because the rate can shift, build a buffer. A weak rupee on application day can push you just under the line.

If you are applying from the United States, the UAE or another country, the same OANDA rule applies to your local currency.

What Counts as Valid Proof of Funds?

UKVI accepts liquid, verifiable money. It does not accept assets that are hard to convert or confirm.

Accepted Funding Sources

  • Your own savings or current account. This is the cleanest option.
  • Your parents' or legal guardians' account. You need a consent letter and an official document showing the relationship, such as your birth certificate. Documents not in English must be translated by a certified translator.
  • An official financial sponsor. This means a government, university or recognised organisation, with a formal letter.
  • A regulated education loan. The lender must be a recognised financial institution and the letter must match UKVI's requirements.

Ask your bank for a stamped statement and, where useful, a letter confirming your balance and account details.

Assets That Do Not Count

  • Shares, stocks and mutual funds
  • Property or land valuations
  • Gold and jewellery
  • Cryptocurrency
  • Overdrafts and credit cards
  • Business accounts (as a general rule)

Fixed deposits can work only if the money is accessible and clearly shown, so check with your adviser before relying on one. Before you submit, always re-read the GOV.UK money page, because banks and rules change.

Can a Friend or Relative Sponsor Me?

Not directly. UKVI accepts parents or legal guardians, or an official sponsor. An uncle, cousin or friend's account is not accepted on its own, even if they are generous.

Do You Need to Show Funds for Dependants?

Most students can no longer bring dependants. Since January 2024, that option is mainly limited to postgraduate research students such as PhD candidates, and certain government-funded students.

If you do qualify, the figures we currently see are £845 per month in London and £680 per month outside London, per dependant, for up to nine months. Confirm the latest amounts on GOV.UK, because these may be updated.

Who Is Exempt from Showing Financial Proof?

If you apply from inside the UK and have already held valid UK permission for at least 12 months, you may not need to show maintenance funds again. The details depend on your sponsor and course, so confirm your case before assuming this applies.

What Other Costs Should You Budget For?

Your bank balance is not the only cost. Plan for these too:

  • The visa application fee. See our UK visa fees from Pakistan guide for a current breakdown.
  • The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). Recent guidance lists it at £776 per year of visa validity. Check the current amount with the GOV.UK IHS calculator.
  • A TB test certificate for applicants from Pakistan.
  • English test costs. Compare options in our IELTS vs PTE guide.

These costs are separate from the maintenance funds, so do not count them inside your balance target.

The Most Common Financial Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

  1. Letting the balance dip. One day below the line breaks the 28-day run.
  2. Using an old statement. Always check the 31-day window.
  3. Sudden large deposits. They raise flags. Keep records that show where the money came from.
  4. Mixing up tuition and maintenance. They are separate numbers.
  5. Skipping the parent consent letter. No letter, no acceptance of parental funds.
  6. Using the wrong exchange rate. Screenshot the OANDA rate on your application day.
  7. Trusting rumours or WhatsApp advice. Rules change. Use GOV.UK and a licensed adviser.

Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Gulberg Greens: Getting Your Documents Ready Locally

Most Pakistani applicants gather bank letters, translations and TB reports in the same few weeks. If you live in Islamabad, Rawalpindi or Gulberg Greens, plan for branch visits, translation appointments and medical scheduling well in advance.

Local banks such as HBL, MCB, UBL, Meezan, Allied Bank and Bank Alfalah each have their own letter formats. Ask your branch for a stamped statement and a bank letter, and check that the account holder's name matches your passport exactly.

What Happens After You Arrive? Future Opportunities

The financial requirement is a gate, not the whole journey. After graduation, eligible students can apply for the Graduate route, which lets you work or look for work in the UK. Currently the Graduate route lasts up to two years, or three for PhD graduates. The government has signalled a shorter duration for future cohorts, so check the current length before you plan.

Scholarships can also reduce the amount you need to fund yourself. Look at Chevening and the Commonwealth Scholarships, both open to Pakistani applicants.

If the UK budget looks tight, compare alternatives such as our Canada study visa route. And once you are settled, your family can plan a trip using our UK visit visa requirements for Pakistani citizens.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much bank balance is required for a UK student visa?

You must show your outstanding first-year tuition plus living costs for up to nine months. Currently that is £1,529 a month in London (£13,761 maximum) and £1,171 a month outside London (£10,539 maximum). The money must be held for 28 consecutive days.

What is the 28-day rule for a UK student visa?

The 28-day rule requires your funds to stay at or above the required total for 28 consecutive days. The closing date of that period must fall within 31 days of your visa application. A single day below the total breaks the period.

Can I use my parents' bank account for a UK student visa?

Yes. UKVI accepts funds held by your parents or legal guardians. You must provide a signed consent letter and an official document, such as a birth certificate, that proves the relationship. Non-English documents need certified translations.

Can I use an education loan as proof of funds?

Yes, if the loan comes from a recognised, regulated lender and your loan letter meets UKVI's requirements. The letter must show that the funds are in your name and available for your course. Always check the current GOV.UK rules before you submit.

Do I need to show tuition fees plus living costs?

Yes. You must show the outstanding first-year tuition shown on your CAS plus living costs for up to nine months. If you have already paid a tuition deposit recorded on your CAS, you can subtract it from the tuition part.

What happens if my balance drops below the requirement?

If your balance falls below the required amount on any day within the 28-day period, that period no longer counts. You would need to rebuild the balance and complete a fresh 28 consecutive days before applying. Keeping a small buffer helps prevent this.

Is a fixed deposit accepted for a UK student visa?

It can be, but only if the funds are accessible and the documents clearly show the amount and ownership. Investments such as shares, mutual funds, property and cryptocurrency are not accepted. Confirm your specific case before relying on a fixed deposit.

Will the financial requirement increase in 2026?

Yes. For applications made on or after 30 November 2026, the monthly rates rise to £1,570 in London and £1,203 outside London. That makes the nine-month maximum £14,130 and £10,827 respectively. Applications submitted before that date use the current rates.

Conclusion: Know Your Number Before You Apply

The UK student visa financial requirement is not complicated once you break it into parts. Find your outstanding tuition on the CAS, add living costs for up to nine months, subtract any allowed deductions, and keep that total in your account for 28 clear days.

Then check the 31-day window, convert currencies with OANDA, and back everything with clean documents. With refusal rates for Pakistani applicants running high, a careful financial file is one of the best things you can control.

Rules and rates change, so always confirm your final figures on GOV.UK before submitting.
